Qantas’ Melbourne Airport domestic terminal (T1) security screening experience will undergo a makeover this year.

Once completed, Melbourne Airport says passengers will have a faster, seamless security scanning experience.

Works have commenced this week to relocate the security scanning equipment to a temporary location. The project is expected to be completed by December 2025.

As part of the works, both the baggage screening and body scanning technology will be upgraded. This will allow passengers flying on Qantas domestic flights to pass through security without removing laptops, tablets or aerosols from carry-on luggage.

Construction of a temporary screening point is now underway. It’ll be located at the eastern end of the terminal, away from the existing security checkpoints.

These changes will align the Qantas security screening experience with the other domestic terminals 3 & 4. International flights arrive and depart from terminal 2 only.

Melbourne Airport Chief of Aviation Jim Parashos said in a statement today that this represents the “final piece of the puzzle” to make the Qantas domestic terminal world-class.

Qantas anticipates the upgrade will result in a smoother, easier and faster experience for customers.

“Customers no longer need to spend time taking laptops and other items out of carry-on luggage which simplifies the process,” Qantas Executive Manager, Global Airports, Darsh Chapman said.

Melbourne Airport is currently in the midst of a series of upgrades. This includes:

  • Works are underway to revamp the retail spaces and facilities within the Qantas domestic terminal

  • Building of a new baggage system for the international terminal (T2)

  • Completion of a larger baggage hall for Virgin Australia’s terminal 3
